Senior Project Week 10: Entry 1 of 2

Well, this is the last week of the term and I can say that I am now finished. I just have to write up my process book and update my website. Here is a final render of the project. I'm fairly pleased with how it turned out. I wanted to challenge myself with a project that focused on my weak points as an artist. In the case, it was texturing and lighting. However, in hindsight it might have just been better to stick with a project that showed off my skills as a modeler. That's beside the point though. Overall, I think it turned out alright. I learned a lot in the process, working with VRay for the first and all. On Thursday I will blog for the last time on this project, but keep checking back because I will continue to blog on other projects I'm working on.

Senior Game Project Week 9: Entry 2 of 2

This is the current render I have of my scene. I still have to mess with the lighting and tweak some texrues but overall it's coming along nicely.

Senior Project Week 9: Entry 1 of 2

This week I begin work on the lighting for the project. I've already messed around a bit with different types of lights and the time of day within the scene. I've also pretty much finished working on the textures. I just have to make a few small tweaks. I'll post a render this Thursday. Hopefully I should be pretty far along with the lighting by then.

Week 8: Eric Swarts

Our presentation is fast approaching. I drew up a simple line level in Flash for Matt to use in the tech demo and I'll be starting work on level 3 this weekend for the actual game.

Senior Game Project Week 8: Entry 2 of 2

Like I said the last entry, I've been experimenting with different ways to texture chipping paint. Here's an image of one of my textures.
This is one of ways I was working with texturing paint chipping. Texturing isn't my strong point, but I'm getting better. I should be finished with the texturing process by Tuesday. Once that's done I'll be working on the lighting in the scene for the last week. Almost done!

Senior Project Week 8: Entry 1 of 2

I seemed to have missed blogging at the end of last week, but I've just been primarily concentrated on textures for the model. I've been experimenting with different ways to do cracked and peeling paint. I just found a way that I'm fairly happy with and am going to go back and change one of my other textures to reflect the new method. I'll be posting some textures this Thursday.

Senior Game Project Week 7: Entry 1 of 2

This week I am working on unwrapping my textures. I'm a little late on this first blog of the week, but everything is on schedule. I planned to have all of the unwrapping done by Friday, and I actually just finished unwrapping the last model a couple of hours ago. I plan to have a good part of the texturing done by this upcoming Tuesday, so we'll see how that goes. I'll make a new post tomorrow updating everyone on my texturing process.

Senior Game Project Week 6: Entry 2 of 2

I've unwrapped about a quarter of the assets within the scene thus far. I plan to get at least three quarters of the unwrapping by the end of the weekend. Another goal for this weekend is to look up lots of reference images for my textures.

Senior Game Project Week 6: Entry 1 of 2

This week marks the beginning of the unwrapping and texturing process. The texturing on this project is very crucial to getting the look I"m going for. I've got a few weeks to spend on this portion of the project and then I need to work on the lighting. I'm about halfway done so far, and I'm pretty pleased with my progress up to this point.

Senior Game Project Week 5: Entry 2 of 2

I added a couple more small assets to the scene and I put a whole in the ceiling, revealing copper pipes. Due to feedback I got, as it stood the environment didn't look "abandoned", so I'm modeling a bit more damage to the environment. However, a lot of the environment's aged look will come out in the textures.

Senior Game Project Week 5: Entry 1 of 2

This week is the final week to model. I'll be adding a couple small additions and tweaking what's already in the scene. I'll give you an update on Thursday with the progress.

Senior Game Project Week 4: Entry 2 of 2

As promised, here is a screenshot of my current modeling progress. Keep in mind that the lighting is only temporary since I'm not going to create the final lighting until I'm done with the texturing of the scene.

Senior Game Project Week 4: Entry 1 of 2

Things are coming along nicely. It's starting to look more and more like an abandoned hospital. I have most of the models in the scene now, and should have all of them in the scene by the 8th. I told you guys I'd have a screenshot for you to look at this week, so I'll have one uploaded on Thursday.

Senior Game Project Week 3: Entry 2 of 2

I've added a couple pieces to the wheelchair, some wrist straps on the arms of the chair and I've modeled the bed frame, bed-side table and oil lamp thus far. It's coming along nicely and I'm very confident I can meet my milestone on the 8th.

Senior Game Project Week 3: Entry 1 of 2

The wheelchair, which will probably be the most complex asset in the scene, has been finished. Also, today I've set my milestones for my project. I split it up into three main parts, which is that of modeling, texturing, and lighting. Next week I'll upload my first screenshot of the project, which I'm looking forward to.

Senior Game Project Week 2: Entry 2 of 2

Alright, I've done a bit more research and I've decided to go with a 40's style mental hospital. I'm going to watch Shutter Island this weekend to give me a better idea of the aesthetic, but I've already begun modeling. I can't wait to see how this will turn out!

Senior Game Project Week 2: Entry 1 of 2

I have in my mind a very good idea of what I want the environment to look like and from what angle I want to view it from. I should have a quick rendered image of what I want the layout of the building itself to look like along with the angle it will be viewed from.

Senior Game Project Week 1: Entry 2 of 2

Sorry this entry is a couple days into next week, but I'm still posting and that's what matters, right? I've finally settled on the type of building I'm doing, which is an abandoned hospital. I've looked up a lot of reference photos of abandoned and run-down buildings.

http://www.marchandmeffre.com/detroit/index.html

These photographers went around Detroit to different buildings that are run-down and abandoned and took fantastic photos. Apart from these photos, I'm also drawing inspiration from the Silent Hill games. I look the creepy abandoned and empty feel they give their environments, along with their beautiful textures that give the environments a dirty, grimy, grungy feel.

Senior Game Project: Week 1, Entry 1 of 2

Today is the first day of the new term. For my class's senior project we were given a large amount of freedom in terms of what we wanted to do. I thought about it and I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do. I'm going to do an environment model of a run-down and abandoned building. I haven't decided what type of building yet, but I'm going to look at a lot of reference for abandoned buildings around where I live. I'm looking to create a creepy and believable atmosphere with this piece, so I'm going to put a lot of time into it. I have a feeling this will be the best piece I've done.
